This is exactly what I did with my not so confident puppy and it worked! Now I am at the point that I was able to ween the treats out (for this behavior) and replace it with verbal reinforcement. It was VERY monotonous while doing this confidence boost, however, I totally agree that it was worth it in the end! Great to read!

I would say that a lazy dog owner should certainly keep a short haired breed, nothing worse than looking at a scruffy unkempt dog

LOL. Well yes, it's more difficult to teach some dogs to walk nicely on leash than others. In addition, I don't know what kind of hound you have, but pits certainly tend to be more forward, active and impulsive than collies and many hounds.
Remember that pulling and getting where she wants to go is only going to cause your pitty to pull more. She needs to be taught a different method of getting where she wants to go. A front-clasping harness which pulls her off balance, cuts down on the opposition reflex triggered by the pulling at her throat AND doesn't choke her is probably a good place to start.

I have 3 dogs; 2 of them, the hound and the collie, are beautiful on a leash, but my pitt.... Not so much. After 6 years, she still insists on choaking herself EVERY time I put a leash on her (which is not all that often). I think she gets overly excited and forgets it's on her. The other 2 just roll their eyes and pretend they don't know her.
