Bred as sled dogs near the Arctic Circle, Siberian Huskies excel as work dogs and feature a double-thick coat. These easy-going dogs require plenty of exercise and regular grooming, but are a rather independent breed. An outdoor life is agreeable to them, even in extreme climates. In the home, the dog retains its predatory instincts and should be supervised around cats and other smaller pets. The AKC calls the Husky an “agreeable companion,” but not one that is overly eager to please. Some native groups and other northern dwellers still keep Huskies as sled dogs.
